Dreamcatchers

They say dream catchers keep away the bad dreams.

The nightmares that don’t let you sleep. Leave you twisting in fright.

But what about the nightmares you live everyday.

No, not the ones that lurk in the darkness, hidden below your pillows.

The ones that stare at you in the eye in broad daylight.

Like the time you were called a randi for wearing shorts on the streets.

When unknown fingers traced their way along your thighs.

When they tried to pry them open by force.

Or how about the time, when you were denied that promotion because you had a vagina.

How they squeezed every last bit of life out of you, but stole your reward.

How they snatched your dreams and trampled on it.

Or wait.

How about the time your uncle PLAYED with you, when you were too young to understand?

And the shame, the guilt and the anger that followed, all the years after!

That once when you were marked unclean, because obviously God didn’t like bleeding women.

All the times you were taken for granted. Your voice shut out.

The days when your boyfriend thought it’s okay to vent out on you. Just, leave a mark or two. After all, you could just cover it with a little foundation here and concealer there.

Or that time, when your husband raped you and everyone you told thought it’s OK.

What about these nightmares?

What about the false promises and hurtful words?

What about the scars that they left on your skin, reminding you of your helplessness?

Will the dream catcher take them away too?

Will it?

Mumbai Diaries: The Most Interesting Cabbie In Town!

“It was destiny that brought me here.” Says Mahesh, a 37 year old cabbie I met just a couple days back. Unlike other cabbies who usually dropped me to my workplace every morning, Mahesh seemed very upbeat and chatty.

But what was very appealing about him was his voice. Deep and husky, like the ones you hear in those sexy deodorant ads.

We got talking right from the minute I took the passenger seat next to him. From demonetization to current movies, to animal behavior in the African deserts, Mahesh had a say on everything. And with that beautiful voice of his, I couldn’t help but gleefully join in the conversation.

Jumping from one topic to the other I asked him how he landed up being a cab driver, because it was very surprising to see a person as well read and aware as him to be riding a cab for a living. He grinned at me and said that he recently lost his job. He told me about his college and how he had a diploma in mechanical engineering which held no value now. How he spent 5 months jumping down media agency to another in a chance to get one break into the voice over, radio industry. How his friends left him one by one when his financial condition deteriorated.

Seeing all the amulets and spiritual “jewelry” on him I asked him what kept him going through all of the tough times? Was it god? “My family is my God. It was my wife and children who made me smile on my worst days. They never made me feel like a failure. They never let me down or made false promises like the world or the so called God did.” “I’ve stopped socializing much, whatever free time I have I spend with my family”.

Behind the tough looking face and buttery deep voice if there was something that shone through was his positivity. Mahesh’s story wasn’t really inspiring or one of a kind. We meet so many others like him. People trying to make it big in the city or dreams Bombay! Of those who fail miserably and end up doing things just to survive this rat race. Dreams and hopes forgotten. Succumbing to the pressures of the city life.

But what was refreshing was his attitude towards everything. He still believes that everything that’s happened has happened for the best. He knows that his dreams of becoming a voice over artist seem bleak but that doesn’t stop him from dreaming about it regardless! His thirst for life and the will to do anything for his loved ones is what made his story better than most of ours. I couldn’t help but ask one last question, ” Can I write about you?” He put on his best smile and told me, “Sure Madam! Would you need a picture too?” As if  to say, this wasn’t the first time someone had asked him to do so 🙂

Her.

She says she’s strong, but within she knows she’s not.
She’s broken, and mutilated and trampled upon.
But she rises from the ashes, and keeps going like nothing ever happened.
She takes the crowded local train everyday, and hates it.
But she does it anyway, because she wants to give her son a good education.
She paints her nails and lines her eyes. She glosses her lips but is never satisfied.
She does not have those Kim Kardashian curves, you see.
She complains about her 32 B and wishes she had a flat tummy.
She hates to wait for her pizza but has  a tower of patience for her boyfriend who never shows up for dinner.
She says she will change tomorrow.
That she will stop complaining and take charge.
But the next day never comes.
Once in a while she lets her hair down and goes dancing.
Tries to forget how pointless her life has been.
She takes one shot, and then another. Anything to fill that numb void within her.
Skipping from one job to another. As if, trying to find her purpose.
Building stories in her head, of how one day, she will travel the world.
How one day, everything will change.
Looking listlessly out the window, she looks at the street kids.
She looks at them laugh and tries to remember when was the last time she did the same.
She has no more memories of happiness. No recollection of peace.
She laughs forcefully but tears roll down her eyes.
The tears don’t stop and she continues laughing hysterically, like a mad woman.
She believes this is her life now.
She looks at her son’s shoes near the door, before she finally takes the final plunge.
The window was the only bliss she could find.
She has given up on her.

Isn’t it strange how familiar this sounds? In today’s “modern world the modern human is somewhat lost. They may be your everyday colleague, someone who you see with that serene face in your college or gym. They look absolutely fine, but somewhere deep within they’re not not.
In the past few months I’ve seen several women cry in public places. Some of them sobbed bitterly, some of them quietly unsuccessfully tried to hide the tears. The others just looked at them with judgmental eyes, I could see no mercy not even pity in them!
I usually go ahead and ask if they’re okay and they just reply with a sad smile. Sometimes with a thank you.
I could say the same about men. But according to the inhumane standards of the society, they are not even at a liberty to cry!
Today we are ensnared in this world where we have no one to turn to. We strut around boasting about the number of our facebook friends, but when we are by ourselves we feel empty. Lonely.
Is this the world we wished for ? A place where everyone is isolated. A place where trust and understanding do not exist anymore?

It’s all about balance .

Today’s world is coloured in extremes . It’s either too much of something , or too less of it .
On one hand we have people like Donald Trump who thrive on narcissism and intolerance and then on the other hand we have instances like the recent visit of Barack Obama to Cuba , that signifies acceptance and harmony .
We have the Taliban and LeT who have set their souls on devouring humanity and collapsing the foundation of the society , And then in the same environment we have people like Malala Yusaifza who strive to build the society and restore the stolen order .
We have innumerable billionaires on the rise , but we also have hit an all time low of people below the poverty level .
I can give a ton of such examples where each party defies the purpose and existence of the other .
Two forces that collide continually to no end .

The Chinese believe in the Yin and Yang . This belief emphasises on the necessity of opposite forces . Dark v/s light , good v/s bad and how other such opposite forces MUST come together in harmony for a universal existence .

We can hence say that ‘ good ‘ loses significance in the absence of ‘bad’ or ‘evil’ . That , good times need to be cherished when times get tough .
We might want everything to be perfect all the time . We might want everything to go according to our plan , to the last detail . But imagine a perfect world where everything is only sunshine and rainbows . In such a world nothing would ever be good enough . Success would never be an accomplishment , because we would never have known failure .
On a lighter note think about this , you might never know what a good hair day is , if you never knew what a bad day looked like !
We would never realise happiness because we would never have experienced sadness ! We would never love , because we wouldn’t know hatred !

We are so affected by the negativity in our lives that we fail to appreciate the goodness . We fail to count the blessings . We let the bad memories corrupt the good ones too . We collapse under the pressure , lose control and give up .

My point is that if your life looks like one big tragedy and if nothing seems to be working in your favour , you don’t need to get all worked up . Instead , all you need to do is reminisce the good days . Draw your inspiration from positivity and be optimistic about the future .
You need to understand that the good days are here only to BALANCE out the bad ones .

After all , as they say , “It’s a bad day , not a bad life ! “

What is a Perfect moment ?

The idea of experiencing a perfect setup always seems to scare us. Mostly because we think that they are just fantasies , and however hard we try they cannot come true . And given our busy lives , the thought of these ‘perfect moments ‘ appear to be tedious .But if only for a moment we stepped back , slowed down , took a deep breath and observed a little  ;we’l see that these moments are all around us  . A perfect moment does not exactly mean a “happy ” moment . They are made up of all those moments when our emotions are inexplicable . When we are so consumed and overwhelmed by the sight of what we see , that we are dumbstruck and short of breadth and words !

It could be when you fall in love and feel the world spin around you  …. It could be when you loose a loved one and there is nothing that can console you …It could be when you earn your first salary  …..or when you loose everything you have and your whole life feels empty .!

All these times don’t resemble each other in any way .But these are the times when you discover yourself , and see your emotional barriers fade away . These times make you vulnerable again and surrender to the moment . And in spite of any emotion they may evoke , they are complete and full of inspiration  . That is why i call them “perfect ”

And here’s a lil poem i wrote to tell you just that ….

PERFECT MOMENTS

Somewhere in this little miserable life of ours ,

Come moments that are priceless;

Moments that define us .

They build around us ‘our’ story , as we know it to be.

These moments need not be out of the ordinary

They need not be compared to definitions of grandeur …

They are hidden in the simplest of things and

They await to be discovered in the midst of everyday burdens .

It could be , when you see the sun go down as you hang by a thread in a Mumbai local !

When you smile at the little girl ,selling roses at the signal ,

Or when you feel the cold wind gush against your face ,through the sunroof of your car .

When you notice wrinkles form around your eyes, but you still ‘know’ you’re beautiful !

When you dance away the night and want to dance some more at dawn .

When tears are the only things that can put you to sleep at night ,

And drowning yourself in work seems the only way to forget….

When you kiss someone for the first time and you feel your lips tremble against theirs

And when seeing that one person smile is all that matters anymore .

When one day you realize that you can speak a million words in silence ,but

A million words fall short of proclaiming the beauty of a moment shared .

These moments make all the difference ,

And a fraction of a second is all it takes to spot these perfect moments.

These are the chosen moments that are void of all imperfections

These moments are what make you ;

You !
